Drawing occupies a prominent position in modern art. If the concept of drawing is extended to include paper as a medium – as is often the case – its pre-eminent importance dates back much further.

In any case, by the 19th century at the latest, drawing had emerged ‘as an independent, genuine form of artistic expression on an equal footing with painting. Works with a completely transformed claim now fall under the old heading of “drawing”… Whereas the entire art of drawing, since the Renaissance, has in one form or another taken the line as the starting point for a wide variety of drawing techniques, it is fascinating to consider how drawing in the 19th century was able to abandon this one-sided orientation and yet survive unscathed as a genre, indeed reaching unforeseen heights.” (Bernd Growe, in: Georges Seurat. Drawings, Munich 1983, p. 15 ff.)
