Lars Dittrich and André Schlechtriem are pleased to present the third solo show by the New York-based artist Robert Lazzarini at the gallery. Titled Deeper Than Wide, this exhibition explores mechanisms that create a foil to the static nature of paintings and sculptures. Lazzarini premieres two sculptural works along with a series of works on canvas and a wall installation within the gallery. The viewer’s experience of the works varies based on physical proximity and offers a way of thinking about gathering information about the world and—a reference to French phenomenological philosopher Merleau-Ponty—the idea of the body as the primary site of knowing.
The exhibition takes as its subject images of the actress Sharon Tate, who was famously married to Roman Polanski and gruesomely murdered in 1969 by the Manson Family. She becomes simultaneously an archetype of physical beauty and the physical manner of her death. Lazzarini’s paintings combine appropriated media photos of the actress with optical patterning, suggesting the refusal of vision as an analogy for the limitations of memory and recall.
The sculptures are based on wall reliefs in the Hollywood Regency design style, which was popular in Southern California from the 1920s through the 1970s. The gold-toned objects conjure the homes of the Hollywood elite. The relief itself belies vision. It is a visual shorthand for an object in the round. Birds and flowering tree branches are wrenched from their normative forms and reshaped into indeterminate geometries, confusing visual and bodily experience.
Deeper Than Wide could be a description of topographical features. It is instead a reference to the manner of Sharon’s death: a stab wound is a specific form of penetrating trauma to the skin that results from a knife or a similar pointed object that is “deeper than it is wide.”
