Wilhelm Leibl – Woman from Dachau with child

Artist

Wilhelm (Maria Hubertus) Leibl was born on October 23, 1844 in Cologne and died on December 4, 1990 in Wurzburg. With his work he stands as a representative of German realism. He studied at the University of Arts in Berlin. In 1870 he started the Leibl-Circle with like-minded painters. His work was especially impressive because of the unvarnished portrayal of people.

Artwork

“Dachauerin mit Kind” was created between 1874 and 1875. It shows the wife of a Miller from Graßlfing in Dachau. It measures 68 x 86 cm (width x height).

Brief description

A woman in black, costume-like clothes is sitting in front of us. Her left arm is placed around a little child, both of which are wearing headgear. The woman’s headgear is made out of fur. The hands of the woman are adorned with gemmed rings, the chest region of her dress is embellished with silver necklaces, and she wearing silver earrings. Even though the woman doesn’t look poor, as a result of her jewellery, you can still observe the hardness in her facial expressions and the detachment in her glance and feel the toughness of her job and everyday life. The direct gaze in the child’s eyes, who is also missing a certain light-heartedness, supports this impression.

Genre & Material

This is a painting from the realism era and was painted using oil on wood.
