Prolog | Mary Ellen, imagine Corona would not determine the current situation and you would welcome us in your home or studio. Where do we speak together? My home and studio are in a wooden house built by a whaling captain for his daughter in 1833. The walls are a bit crooked and the wide wooden floor boards creak, sun streams in the many windows and the view of the tree lined street and other village homes are distorted through the old wavy glass. We might sit at a corner table where two windows meet, with some tea. Where do you come from, where were you born? I was born, raised and lived in and around New York City. How and where do you currently live and work? Now I live in Sag Harbor an old whaling village at the far end of Long Island, New York. For better or worse it’s part of the posh resort area of beach towns known as The Hamptons. Which stations and people have shaped you? Some teachers were very important to me. Much later other artists, curators and gallerists have given me tremendous opportunities to make, exhibit, and sell my work and this has transformed my life. Which authors and books can be found on your bookshelf? Well I have a lot of books as it’s the constant theme of my work! On my shelves I have mostly …

Founded in 1696, the Akademie der Künste (Academy of Arts) in Berlin is one of the oldest cultural institutes in Europe. This international community of artists currently has about 400 members and includes the sections fine arts, architecture, music, literature, performing arts, as well as film and media art. KW Institute for Contemporary Art aims to approach the central questions of our times through the production, display, and dissemination of contemporary art. Since its inception, 25 years ago, KW has established itself, not only as an institution, but also as a dynamic and lively space for progressive practices within the Berlin art scene, as well as in an international context. Kunsthaus Dahlem

Kunsthaus Dahlem is an exhibition venue for postwar German modernism (East and West). It is administered and operated by Atelierhaus Dahlem, a non-profit subsidiary of the Bernhard Heiliger Foundation founded in 2013. Located at the edge of the Grunewald, the building was open as an exhibition venue in summer 2015 after a renovation and dismantling in accordance with historic preservation standards. There will also be a permanent exhibition on the building’s eventful history, free-of-charge to visitors. One essential area of concentration of the exhibition venue is the presentation of sculpture, supplemented by painting, prints and drawings, and photography. The Verein Berliner Künstler (VBK) House of Artists – more than a gallery – is a self-governing and independent association of visual artists living and / or working in Berlin. The club’s own gallery on Schöneberger Ufer acts as a platform for various exhibition formats and discourse events. In addition, the VBK cooperates with national and international organizations and implements art projects in Germany and abroad.
