until 02.11. | #4387ARTatBerlin | ZWINGER Galerie shows from 07. September 2024 (Opening: 06.09.) the exhibition Dr. SYNTAXX by the artist Peter Duka.
Peter Duka’s new studio was busier than ever last year – and not just because there was a bit more space. You could find him there around midday, surrounded by a battery of canvases, almost all in the same format, one hundred by eighty. And then all the people. When you have assistants like that, who needs critics? First and foremost Doctor Syntax, the picaresque head of research in the experimental image department, his art-scientific ace with deep roots in the 18th century, still and always “in search of the picturesque”
The Doctor now spells his name as “xx” and also has a clumsy assistant: Mr Clutter, to whom everything post-structural, everything non-figurative or no longer figurative is left in the picture. His problem: the doctor has told him that his work has to be “gawky”, unthinking, incongruous, like an objectless tarantula on a romantically lush centrepiece cake. In short, he has learnt to distrust himself, even though he should be naive. Massive innocence problem
Peter Duka and Doctor Syntaxx often talk to him in a tone that you would use with children. Duka tries his best to work with the two of them, because they are, in their own right, far more than just assistants, rather specialists who have been trained for decades to excel. Who jump from the frying pan into the gas flames, who over time know more and more about less and less, until they know everything about nothing.
