until 20.05. | #1172ARTatBerlin | White Square Gallery shows from 10th March 2017 the exhibition “Das Zeichen im Zeichen des Zeichens” by the artist Michael Straub.

In the exhibition “The sign in the Sign of the Sign “, the White Square Gallery presents fifteen paintings by the Berlin artist Michael Straub, who was born 1964 in Frankfurt am Main.
The large and small format paintings are color intensive, line oriented abstractions, which do not immediately reveal their relation to objectivity. Only the ldeepening into the picture allows the viewer to take in his own eyes the first traces and thus follow the thread of the artist.

This eye trip is interrupted by some funny surprises and subtle discoveries, which are parts of the becoming picture composition. And suddenly the images stop to be muddles of colors and lines. The eye unravels them, begins to grasp the space and finaly discovers the form with which everything begins.

Michael Straub takes a long time to finish his paintings. Most of the peaces were created between the years 2000 and 2016. He speaks about a process which he begins autonomously, but which is quickly transformed into an interaction between the artist and his work. A gesture of the artist causes the reaction of the art work, which then has to be considered and answered.
When the artist starts to work, he is right in the middle of his painting, with everything that belongs to it … with a lot of time, a lot of patience and much humor.

If you want to look closely, you could find in the pictures a lot of signs, some visual hints to classical painting, which the artist is well versed with.

Michael Straub studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf with Prof. Markus Lüpertz and at the University of the Arts Berlin with Prof. Georg Baselitz.
After studying, he traveled around the world. He was in Egypt, Dominican Republic, Libya, Mexico, Morocco, Mongolia, Poland and presented his paintings and projects in many exhibitions in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Paris, Beijing, Ulaanbaatar and Zurich.
