until 15.09. | #4455ARTatBerlin | aquabitArt Galerie shows from Tuesday, 10. September 2024 the exhibition Free Horses by the artist Luigi Pirastu.

The exhibition “Free Horses” by Luigi Pirastu will be shown at aquabitArt Gallery Berlin from September 11 to 15, during the 13th edition of Berlin Art Week.

The Italian architect and sculptor Luigi Pirastu is an artist who combines tradition with innovation. His training at the Istituto Universitario di Architettura in Venice and his international experience have enriched his artistic approach and enabled him to develop his new position in art. Pirastu began his career as an interior designer in prestigious buildings such as the Corderie dell’Arsenale in Venice and the Italian Trade Center in London and also collaborated with the well-known Catalan artist Antoni Miralda for the Spanish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.

In recent years, Pirastu has concentrated primarily on sculpture, developing two different themes. On the one hand, he creates abstract horse figures made of stone, malachite, turquoise or blue krista, and on the other, fish made of composite materials. His most recent sculptural project, which is now being shown in Berlin, is called “Free Horses”.

Luigi Pirastu’s depictions of horses are archaic, stylized and sketchy: they are reminiscent of stones polished by nature. The animal transcends reality to act, play and fly, embodying a sense of freedom and joy. Pirastu does not look for the exact anatomy of the horse, but concentrates on the rather unnatural, fantastic gesture.

The artist describes his works as “sculptural installations” and thus places himself between the formerly rigid boundaries of artistic media. With his art, he celebrates a flowing, fluid world of great freedom of expression. His horses are free, “Free Horses”, freer than the categorizations in which we humans usually think of our lives.

Pirastu’s sculptural installations feature fascinating technical details: We see representations of meadows with green fiberglass inserts or Plexiglas beams illuminated by special LEDs in different colors. We witness flights and dives. The sculptures are often arranged on pedestals, on cylindrical columns.

What we can discover here is an allegorical and surreal work, a hymn to freedom and the possibility of achieving the seemingly impossible. Each horse is unique and represents dynamism and vitality in an unseen way. The artist takes us on a journey that leads us to reflect on concepts of freedom, fluidity and identity.

This art gives us a sense of timelessness and continuity with nature. It has a hybrid nature and has the ability to interact with the space and the audience in a unique way. “We live in an increasingly fluid world,” says Pirastu. “A world that increasingly challenges sharp categorizations of artistic and identity-related forms of expression.” In this sense, the artist’s horses are symbols of a freedom that transcends our daily boundaries. They express a vitality that seems to defy traditional definitions. They break free by acting, playing, flying and going against the flow and their own boundaries. They are “free horses”.

“Kairos”, the Greek god of the favorable moment that – sometimes – reveals itself to man, is in this work. Each horse, in its stylized form, captures a moment of pure possibility, a moment in which reality can be rewritten. Pirastu sees his work as a celebration of existence, the power of creativity, beauty and freedom. His works are an invitation to see the world with new eyes. Now, for the first time in Germany, there is a wonderful opportunity to do so in Berlin.
