until 11.08. | Galerie Dittmar shows from 27th June 2018 the exhibition of photography „Lissabon“ by the artists Tina Deininger + Gerhard Jaugstetter.

The starting point for these photographs was the study of the Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa, who has repeatedly conjured up the essence and history of his country, especially of Lisbon and its people in dense pictures. This challenged the photographers Tina Deininger and Gerhard Jaugstetter to pursue their tracks in their own way.

The images capture, free from anything purely documentary or anecdotal, moments that reflect a mood, a certain sentiment. The authenticity to which the photographers are committed also includes the classical photographic methods used. It plays a lot of shadowy, nocturnal, which can be read metaphorically and, moreover, taken literally, meant a technical challenge for the photographers before all content related references. Far from any staging, but of great formal certainty, the images are condensed into tableaux of almost symbolic power. The feeling of life that is given expression and lets something timeless, a historical deep layer echo, is free of any nostalgia.

All this is close to Lisbon, as Pessoa saw it, hiked and imagined and used as a projection screen for his inner travels. The brown-toned baryta prints express the prevailing melancholy mood here. But the present Lisbon remains the theme in the photographs, it is never denied and yet transcended. The images, in their associative richness, develop an intensity given only to them. Thus, in relation to the literary starting point, the old question is also touched as to the relationship between language and image in their approach to reality.

Tina Deininger and Gerhard Jaugstetter completed a photography apprenticeship and worked in advertising photography. Starting in 1990, they devoted themselves to more and more extensive, often inspired by literature photographic projects mainly in the Spanish-Portuguese language area. Stations were next to Lisbon, among others, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires and the Spanish regions, which are documented in several publications. The group of works “Pessoas Lisbon” received the greatest attention, in 1997 a comprehensive volume appeared, numerous exhibitions followed, among others in the Literaturhaus Munich. The Lisbon images became iconic, they accompanied countless publications on Portuguese culture and literature, often as entire picture series.
