until 09.06. | #1379ARTatBerlin | pavlov’s dog presents from 20th May 2017 the exhibition “Projekte zur Bestätigung des Neuen” (Projects for confirming the New) by the artist Andreas Rost.

Andreas Rost was educated to believe in communism while he was growing up in DDR like everybody in his hometown. The system and its educational concepts failed, but the question is the result of the utopias of communism still characterises the photographer and his artistic work till today or not.

In 2016, Rost traveled to Minsk for his work named “Projects for confirming the new”. When he was exploring the existing monument of Stalinist architecture, it reminded him of modernist figures manifestos such as Kasimir Malenwitsch who often claimed to regulate people’s way of living through aesthetic means. Rost realised that Stalinism had not simply replaced modernity, but actually Stanilism architecture carried lots of modernity. At the same time, it seemed to him that people were dismissed into a “transcendental homelessness” with abolition of communism and having faith in him.

From this point of view, 20 highly overpowered architectural details, 20 portrait of protagonists on a concert, and three sequences of five panorama-mounted photographs were created for “Projects for confirming the new”. Rost’s work has references to Kasimir Malevitsch and Alexander Rodtschenko and can be read as a contribution to the centenary of the October Revolution. The title is a possible translation of “PROUN” acronym, which El Lissitzky described as an artistic project and a graphic portfolio.
