until 26.01. | #2215ARTatBerlin | GALERIE SPRINGER BERLIN shows from 2nd October 2018 the exhibition ESSENZEN – Photographs from Four Decades by the photographer couple Ute Mahler and Werner Mahler.

As part of the EMOP Berlin – European Month of Photography 2018, Galerie Springer Berlin is presenting works by the photographers Ute Mahler and Werner Mahler for the first time, thereby enriching their gallery program. The extensive exhibition “Essences – Photographs from Four Decades” includes works by Ute Mahler and Werner Mahler from various creative periods. In addition, the gallery presents a selection from the joint series “Monalisen der Vorstädte”, which the Mahlers created between 2009 and 2011.

A central position of the exhibition are fashion photographs, which were made in the years 1977 to 1994 for the magazine “Sibylle”. There are also photographs by Ute Mahler from 1980 with the dancer Jutta Germany. Likewise a series by Ute Mahler, which was created in Paris in 1979 during a scholarship stay that was unusual for the GDR back then. In addition, the gallery shows early works by Werner Mahler (1975 to 1978) and a series of landscape photographs from the 1980s.

Although the exhibition is only able to present a section of the equally extensive and impressive work of the two photographers, it provides deep insights into their diverse and creative work. Not least on the basis of some iconic photographs, it is easy to illustrate the very own imagery and technique that the artists developed and perfected. Meanwhile, the two founding members of the OSTKREUZ agency usually work together. In the coexistence that has existed since 2009, u.a. the series Monalisen of the suburbs and The strange days. Soon, the new series Small Town will be published by Hartmann Books. In all of these projects, the qualities and experiences of the two photographers * merge into jointly developed series and artworks.
