until 09.06. | #2015ARTatBerlin | lorch + seidel contemporary presents from 28th April 2018 the exhibition UP IN THE EAST, DOWN IN THE WEST by the artist Tobias Wyrzykowski.

Tobias Wyrzykowski, born in 1987 in Würzburg, studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg. In 2002 he was a scholarship holder of the Cusanuswerk. In 2013, Prof. Michael Munding named him a master student.

Here red paint pops on raw canvas and leaves a frayed blob. There it is poured thinly and runs to irregular color surfaces. Elsewhere, the color seems to run down to the edge of the picture or is wiped towards the center of the picture. The painting style is spontaneous and intuitive. At first glance, one would speak of abstraction. Yet there are motifs reminiscent of the familiar: sky, clouds, suns, stars, comets, horizons, sea, fire. But the color and its job on the canvas are already half the battle on the way there. The intense gradations of blue and turquoise, the way they mix and blend into each other, how the pure white clings to it … no, that’s not abstract, it’s a beach with a sea and foaming waves. The background image is not just a black area in the upper third of the screen. It rather suggests a night sky with blue shining stars. The title of the picture (Burning Bush) is an additional, but not necessary interpretation aid to these carefully constructed pictures.
