until 08.12. | #2252ARTatBerlin | Galerie Martin Mertens shows from 20th September 2018 the exhibition Temperature of Time by the artists Tessa Verder and Ralf Peters.

In this double exhibition we show works by the photo artists Tessa Verder and Ralf Peters. The connecting element is nature as a motif, which, on the one hand, is familiar and on the other hand unfamiliar. Both artists are related to the art of German Romanticism. The calm and aloofness that sets in the work of both artists, seems ambivalent in today’s time, which is characterized by speed and networking. The motives of both artists form a calming pole in the midst of the flood of images that surrounds us daily and online every day. You can almost feel a connection to the German romanticism and yet the pictures seem strangely unreal.

In dealing with German romanticism, both artists also address questions about their homeland and identity – terms that have become more relevant today and that trigger controversial discussions. At Verder, photos from around the world (such as Iceland, South America, Africa or Asia) are interwoven with elements from paintings by Caspar David Friedrich or other romantics to create something new that, on the one hand, is familiar on the other hand.

The nocturnal, illuminated trees by Ralf Peters are also reminiscent of the mighty trees, which, for play such an important role with Caspar David Friedrich. The solitary tree becomes the main actor on his nocturnal stage. Dramatically staged, the trees of Peters are illuminated with an extremely strong flashlight at an angle of up to 180 degrees during long exposures. This gives them volume and is presented quite differently than a shot in the flash could show. The branches look like a drawing. The whole picture gets painterly qualities and the individual character of each tree comes to the fore.
