The mix of typical Berlin cheeky impudence and politically charged, anarchic protest culture on the one hand, as well as cosmopolitanism and international orientation on the other, has shaped ter Hell’s work ever since.

In the great restart of Berlin art around 1980, ter Hell belonged to the group 1/61, the more conceptual-oriented competition to the neo-expressive painting of the Galerie am Moritzplatz. As a pupil of the tachistic old master Fred Thieler, he takes over his gestural approach as well as his love of experimentation. The other “point de résistance” is Jackson Pollock. The mixture of typical Berlin cheeky impudence and politically charged, anarchic protest culture on the one hand, as well as cosmopolitanism and international orientation on the other, has shaped ter Hell’s work ever since. […] Those who trace the emotions of this world of images discover a certain melancholy, perhaps even despair, behind the rational, “cool” attitude and the occasionally escalating, almost rebellious actionism – not only about the state of the world in general, but also also about the individual destiny. It is about the existential being thrown back on oneself, the task of each individual to determine and assert his place in the world – the desire to overcome the ill-fated. Several pictures of ter Hells bear the title “references”, probably to be understood as an expression of the desire for a life context.
