until 28.08. | #3100ARTatBerlin | Galerie Inga Kondeyne – Raum für Zeichnung (> Room for Drawing) presents from 24. July 2021 a solo exhibition with works by the artist Sam Szembek.

This year, we can again perceive the tension between 4 or 5 concentrated black lines on the white of Sam Szembek’s papers in an exhibition at the gallery. Over decades, the material for his work has remained unchanged: Paper, charcoal and eraser. The white of the papers in the studio constantly challenges him again and again as a counterpart. Concentrated, the accumulated experience transfers the lines through his hand until he is convinced that these jet-black lines must stand in relation to each other on the white sheet in this way and no other. Between the infinite possibilities offered by the vertical, horizontal and diagonal line progressions, recurring patterns of drawing crystallise, which, as it were, stand in the field of their own tradition. Sam Szembek’s preferred format of 78 x 98 cm allows him to work in an expansive manner. The drawings illustrate anew how the artist tries to mark out areas with signs through lines in the infinity of white.
