until 08.10. | #3431ARTatBerlin | BBA Gallery presents from 27. August 2022 (Opening on 26.08.) the exhibition Digital Tenebrism by the artist Rómulo Celdrán.

Rómulo Celdrán is a Spanish artist who develops his work in drawing, painting and sculpture. BBA Gallery presents the premiere of his latest series called Digital Tenebrism. The series is a tribute and a testament to the artist’s admiration for this painterly movement and its representatives. In the history of Western painting, the word tenebrism describes the use of extreme contrasts of light and dark in figurative compositions to enhance their dramatic effect. Painters such as Caravaggio used the so-called chiaroscuro technique to define their motifs through the use of light and shadow.

In Rómulo Celdrán’s paintings, the source of light that illuminates the scene is no longer a small window, a candle or an oil lamp, but a mobile device that is checked by the figures in the darkness of their domestic surroundings. Apart from these small details that provide a clearly recognisable presence to the images, their spirit of seclusion and mystery across centuries points to the unchanging nature of human existence beyond historical episodes or technological developments.
