until 22.10. | #0704ARTatBerlin | Galerie MARTIN MERTENS shows from the 9th September 2016 the exhibition Rast by the artist  Kai Mailänder.

The translation of the word Rast is break: a temporary and defined intermittence during a trip, a hike or an expedition.
The artist Kai Mailänder may have chosen this title because he is looking back on his artistic journey but also allowing us to discover new developments in his work. The foundation of his paintings are still black and white pictures from books and magazines printed between the 50s and the 80s. The pictures’ original page numbers describe Mailänders cryptic system of arranging his work titles.
In a first step the artist combines these pictures with images from the internet and digital media and prints them on ‘new’, white paper. The printer alienates the template and the artist then adds watercolor and laquer to the work. This process is followed by several steps of cutting and reassemble the pieces and then adding additional layers of oil color and paint.
He is using a similar technique for his new body of work on canvas: he scans handmade collages, enlarges them digitally and finally prints them on canvas, which serves the painting as a base frame. Mailänders new works represent a deeper understanding of the painting process and the different layers of information on his paintings show a powerful overlap of traditional artistic working methods and generated images. Objectivity and abstraction meet elements of nature and technique. Together they create traces and leave marks of disturbances, deferrals and repetitions.

Vernissage: Friday, 9th September 2016, 06:00 – 09:00 p.m.
