until 11.07. | #2500ARTatBerlin | Laura Mars Gallery presents from 15th June 2019 the solo exhibition DOPE ON CANVAS by the Berlin artist DAG.

The dose makes the dope. The latest series of paintings by the Berlin artist DAG explores the fine line between ecstasy and crash, pleasure and hangover. From 15 June to 11 July 2019 it will be shown for the first time by the Laura Mars Gallery.

DAG’s latest works concentrate on lines that are loosely or condensed into lucid geometric objects. They stagger brightly in color on darkly set canvases, cross, overlap, form alliances and dissonances, entice the viewer to explore their own lights and shadows. Like layers of electronic music, the layers of lines overlap, are dissolved, rewritten, form parallel tracks in a compositional network. Following the ideas of Concrete Painting as formulated by Theo van Doesburg, DAG’s compositions are entirely concentrated on color and composition. They need no content, no art historical reference, when edges and angles, formations and surfaces incessantly change the direction of seeing, thinking and feeling. Because DAG’s pictures could be anything – traces, objects and at the same time their dissolution. “Subversion must create its own chiaroscuro,” writes Roland Barthes (The Pleasure of the Text, 1976).

DAG’s painting traces back to the fast, restless painting he created in the exploding Berlin club culture and transformed into rapid painting performances in the mid-1990s. As the figurehead of the admired Berlin music and art scene, which was picked up and copied everywhere, he toured the whole world. In the speed and intoxication of this time, DAG trained his consciousness for constellations, rhythm, dynamics and developed a characteristic style. After the club time, he experimented with various materials, which he preferred to find in the DIY store rather than in the artists’ supplies. He is interested in structures, forms and patterns, such as architecture, but also the fleeting nature of music or words. Translated into abstract surrogates, DAG draws them from the source ground of his canvases in recourse to his compositional intuition and sets them in constant motion.

The DAG catalogue will be published on the occasion of the exhibition. DOPE ON CANVAS with a text by Ulrike Pennewitz.
