Rice Bowl and Avocado | oil/canvas | 19.7 x 23.6 inches | 2013
For unfathomable reasons, the rice bowl bows towards a rather unimpressive avocado. The consummately refined art object and the leathery, waxy, piece of shimmering fruit seem to be engaged in a rapt dialogue. The contrast between the two could hardly be more striking. The precious porcelain object, decorated in the blue-and-white style, summons a host of associations with East Asian and European art history. The bowl’s décor can only be guessed at: on the outside, a group of houses set among trees; on the inner edge, an ornamental frieze. Two pure white highlights may indicate a colorless glaze. In his reduced still life,
Pavel Feinstein playfully stages the painted scene on the porcelain; the result is comparable to the depiction of a picture set in a painted interior, or to a story that, in being retold, involuntarily yields the relish of reinterpretation.
