until 24.10. | #5142ARTatBerlin | Kuckei + Kuckei shows from Thursday, 10. September 2026 the exhibition Take Five by the artist Michael Laube.

Who isn’t familiar with the melody from Dave Brubeck’s “Take Five,” which can effortlessly and cheerfully carry you through even the gloomiest of days. Set in five/four time, the piece also conveys an almost irresistible urge to move. The same is true for the works by Michael Laube, whose pieces combine the qualities of a traditional conception of painting with a quest to push the boundaries of the medium. Laube breaks down the layering of paint and glazes on the canvas—a technique common in “classical painting”—into individual layers: Through the use of transparent acrylic glass, the individual layers seem to expand weightlessly into the space, allowing them to be viewed independently of one another from different perspectives. As the viewer moves in front of the work, new color constellations and impressions continually emerge, charmingly eluding any definitive definition.

ART at Berlin - Kuckei + Kuckei - Michael Laube

Michael Laube, 15-26, 2026, Acrylic Paint on Acrylic Glass, 5 parts: 45 x 30 x 8 cm each

This, Michael Laube’s 12th solo exhibition at Kuckei + Kuckei, presents his latest works, which combine a thematic focus with a new, unified direction developed specifically for this exhibition: Inspired by Dave Brubeck and drawing on the art-historical significance of the number five, Laube embraces this odd number as a kind of set of instructions. The number five sets the tone in various ways: there is a five-part work as well as a work in the shape of a pentagon. There are works that employ the division into five parts as a compositional principle, as well as those that deliberately utilize five colors or five color fields. Michael Laube is now working in a slightly smaller format than in his earlier works; within some of the pieces, there is a rhythmic recurrence of five segments.

Michael Laube was born in Coburg in 1955. He studied painting at the UdK  in Berlin and graduated in 1994 as a master student of Georg Baselitz. He lives and works in Berlin and Neubrandenburg.
