until 14.01. | #3688ARTatBerlin | Galerie Friese will be showing an exhibition of paintings by the artist Matti Kujasalo from 5 November 2022 (vernissage: 04.11.). At the same time, works by Friedrich Teepe will be presented.

In Matti Kujasalo’s second solo exhibition at Galerie Friese, the focus is on the paintings he has created in recent years and on his current paintings, in which colour plays an increasingly central role.

Matti Kujasalo created the foundations of his reduced vocabulary as early as the mid-1970s, from which he continues to draw new pictorial inventions to this day: line, dot, circle and square.

On exclusively circular or square canvases, he composes area-filling structures on a white or black ground, each painting being based on a specially developed mathematical concept. These grid-like structures are at first only perceptible as coherent, oscillating formations, sometimes stretching lightly, then again condensed over the canvases, are sometimes two-dimensional and then again deep three-dimensional spaces. On closer inspection, these interwoven constructions float and dissolve into inconceivably fine structures and details.

And that is precisely where the power of Kujasalo’s pictures lies: between strict precision and visual opulence, they are both dissolute and clear – and always challenging to the viewer.

Vernissage: Friday, 04 November 2022, 03:00 p.m. to 08:00 p.m.,

Exhibition dates: Saturday, 05 November until Saturday, 14 January 2023

Friedrich Teepe

The work of the Osnabrück artist Friedrich Teepe (1929-2012), whom we are exhibiting at the gallery for the first time, is also designed for sensual experience. Teepe studied with Prof. Joseph Fassbender and Prof. Georg Meistermann at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1958 to 1962 and created an idiosyncratic oeuvre spanning more than 50 years, at the centre of which is his very own transformation of bodily experience.

In collaboration with the estate, we are showing a selection of his “relief paintings” from the early 1970s, which mark the transition of his interest from painting to the object-like nature of the image carrier. His fabric works of the 1980s, created in collaboration with his wife Ursula Teepe, form the focus of the exhibition. They bear witness to Teepe’s close exchange with his fellow students Reiner Ruthenbeck, Blinky Palermo and Franz Erhard Walther and formulate an independent position: as space-occupying or space-defining objects in oversized format, they explore a new kind of physical relationship between viewer and work and at the same time the possibilities of “spatial painting”.

Vernissage:  Friday, 04 November 2022, 03:00 p.m. to 08:00 p.m.,

Exhibition dates: Saturday, 05 November until Saturday, 03 December 2022
