until 10.08. | #2116ARTatBerlin | The gallery Benhadj&Djilali shows since 2nd August 2018 the exhibition Handle With Care by the Canadian-Iranian artist Maryam Keyhani.
Like an armor, Maryam Keyhani does layers and layers of fabrics and colors and her own signature hats that make her a real apparition and draws attention wherevershe goes. But the extravagant sheath conceals fragility and personal trauma underneath. It’s this confrontation of outward disguise through a striking armor versus the escape into a sensitive inner life that shapes her work and is trajectory to the exhibition “Handle With Care”
Pastel drawings, feather paintings and life-size glass and epoxy sculptures, she creates a fantasy world that humorously-playfully explore the depths of Keyhani’s consciousness in a disturbing, yet, beguiling manner. The hybrid creatures, half self-portrait, half fabulous beasts, are allegories of the everyday war between reality’s cruelty the flight into an inner dream world.
Maryam Keyhani was born in Teheran and raised in Toronto. After a stint in Paris, the Canadian-Iranian artist now splits her time between Toronto and Berlin. In her multidisciplinary practice, she creates surreal fantasies as a refuge from the anxiety towards the real world and its traumatic experiences. After exhibitions in Toronto and Dubai, her work is at display at BENHADJ&DJILALI Galerie in Berlin from August 2-10th for the first time.
