until 05.08. | #3836ARTatBerlin | Galerie Michael Haas presents from April 28, 2023 the duo-exhibition of the artists Louise Nevelson and George Rickey.

Galerie Michael Haas is pleased to present the works of two exceptional U.S. artists – Louise Nevelson and George Rickey – in a joint exhibition at the gallery’s Niebuhrstraße and Kunst Lager Haas spaces.

Since the 1960s, both Louise Nevelson and George Rickey have been located in the German art scene through their participation in documenta III and IV. George Rickey is widely known primarily for his outdoor sculptures; for example, his sculpture “Four Squares in a Square” (1969) returned to its place in front of the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin just last year, following renovation. Nevelson’s works are less well known in Germany, which is surprising, since significant works by Nevelson can be found in every American museum, and her works are also present in public spaces in the USA – especially in New York.

Louise Nevelson (1899-1988), one of the most influential postwar artists, exhibited regularly on the New York art scene and later in the world’s major museums beginning in the 1940s. Most notably for her mature work, memorable wall pieces and sculptures for which she is famous today, Nevelson used everyday objects and found objects of all kinds, which she carefully assembled into assemblages, sculptures, and collages. She painted her powerful sculptures monochrome, usually black, and created mysterious worlds in her exhibitions. In her collages, she left the materials largely in their original state, their origins still clearly discernible. Nevelson viewed her persona as an extension of her works, and her eccentric appearance captivated photographers such as Helmut Newton and Marie Cosindas.ART at Berlin - Galerie Michael Haas - George Rickey2 Small-min

George Warren Rickey (1907-2002) turned to kinetic sculpture and became one of its most important representatives. Rickey’s works, graceful stainless steel structures, some of enormous dimensions, composed of strictly geometric forms, present themselves as surprisingly lively in idiosyncratic movement and seemingly defy the laws of gravity – an effect Rickey achieved by shifting centers of gravity using weights. These sculptures, which at first seem purely technical, find their inspiration in nature and, above all, move in this extraordinarily fluid and natural way.

In the exhibition Louise Nevelson & George Rickey, the two artists will be exhibited together for the first time. On view will be wall sculptures, collages and sculptures by Louise Nevelson, as well as wall and ceiling, interior and exterior sculptures by George Rickey. A catalog will be published to accompany the exhibition.

The exhibition of George Rickey’s works at Galerie Michael Haas also marks the beginning of a series of exhibitions and events on George Rickey in and around Berlin in 2023. At the end of May, a show exclusively of Rickey’s outdoor sculptures will open at Skulpturenpark Schlossgut Schwante, and in September the George Rickey Foundation will hold a symposium on the artist (also at Schlossgut Schwante).
