until 20.10. | #2127ARTatBerlin | 68projects der GALERIE KORNFELD shows from 14th September 2018 the Group Exhibition Moments of Intimacy by the artists Kyle Coniglio, Anthony Cudahy and Doron Langberg.
Resisting solidification of form and relying on strategies of artifice, play and observation. Anthony Cudahy, Doron Langberg and Kyle Coniglio make figurative paintings that play with a tender depiction of their subjects. Through strategies of collage, mood lighting and unexpected editorial reveals; these three painters use painting as an allegory of queer desire.
Specifically produced for this exhibition, Kyle Coniglio’s series of lounging men in smoky rooms evoke the artifice of an emotional moment, dramatized by the cut of the light, the face of the figure in his paintings cast in shadow, and unzipped pants that rest on the figure’s legs. The emotion on the face of these figures is lost in concern mimicking worry, and points to the artifice of these paintings, causing wonder about what might be tragically wrong?
Anthony Cudahy, primarily working from found photographs, makes paintings that focus on the crop and repetition of this crop as a point of tension in his work. Pulling from what Cudahy calls “image histories”, Cudahy is interested in the transformation and degradation that an image is subjected to through reproduction. By translating photography into painting, Cudahy’s interpretations exaggerate their photographic and collaged stillness through animated brush strokes and saturated color choices.
Notable in Doron Langberg’s work is the methodological and loving care that the surface of the paintings are given. Langberg, a previous 68projects resident artist, creates the space around the figure to invite them over to stay for awhile. Through his process Langberg further develops his relationship with his subjects as the paintings are made with people whom he already has a personal relationship with. Through developing this relationship, the space is built for Virginia to absentmindedly look towards a notebook and for Maayan to appear out of the red of a chair, the tender build of the environment in his paintings inform the emotionality of the figures in the work.

Through finding a moment of intimacy between lovers, between the viewer and the painting and inviting a viewer to gaze into these moments, empathy is created between all parties in Cudahy, Coniglio and Langberg’s works. These figurative painters invite viewers to look close and to pay close attention to moments in between.
Anthony Cudahy is a painter living and working in Brooklyn, NY. He received his BFA in 2011 from Pratt Institute, and co-curates a publishing project named Slow Youth. In September, he will pre- sent a solo exhibition at 1969 Gallery (New York), and has shown at The Java Project (Brooklyn, NY) and Farewell Books (Austin, TX). He has been in group shows at Danese/Corey, MULHERIN NY, Practice, Harpy Gallery, and ATHICA, among others. His work has also been featured and reviewed in publications including Mossless, the Paris Review, Hello Mr., Marco Polo Quarterly, and Cake- boy. He is a former resident of the Artha Project. Dashwood Books produced a zine in 2017 of Cu- dahy and his husband, Ian Lewandowski’s, work.
Kyle Coniglio (born 1988) has his BFA from Montclair State University and an MFA from Yale. He has been an affiliated fellow at the American academy in Rome via the Al Held foundation as well as a fellow of the Queer Art Mentorship program in New York City. Kyle’s work has been included in exhibitions in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Los Angeles. He has taught painting at Montclair State University, Caldwell University, and currently teaches at William Paterson univer- sity. Kyle lives and works in Hoboken, New Jersey.
Doron Langberg, born in 1985 in Yokneam Moshava, Israel, currently lives and works in Queens, NY. His work has been exhibited at Horton Gallery, Jeff Bailey Gallery, Anna Kustera Gallery, Ana Cristea Gallery, Driscoll Babcock Gallery, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA) Museum, the Detroit Museum of New Art and in various other spaces all over the world. Langberg received his MFA in 2012 from the painting department at Yale University, his BFA in 2010 from the University of Pennsylvania, and a certificate in 2010 from PAFA. As part of the 68projects residency program in 2017 he lived and worked in Berlin.
