until 15.06. | #4245ARTatBerlin | ZWINGER Galerie shows from 20. April 2024 the exhibition Penatenhimmel by the artist Kerstin Drechsel.
Tritone, the half octave, the devils interval – “I am the devil, says my mother”. This is a quote from Kerstin Drechsel’s text collages, which she applies in red cross-stitch writing on a white background. These are not embroideries on linen, the large-format text images are not beguine: screen prints on white primed wooden panels, which at best imitate the craft technique (traditionally carried out by women). The texts, consisting of incomplete sentences, catchwords, fragments of thoughts and memories, are arranged like interwoven stanzas. Associations from different areas of the life of a self-constituting self, which finds itself between religious community, emancipatory queerness, being uplifted and breaking out, collide. “A greeting of peace becomes a French kiss”. Biographical elements resonate and become material, among other things.
The installation of the panels is unusual: projecting over the edges of the ceiling, the staging has an unstable, unhinged quality, like an oversized house of cards. May the Penates, the Roman household gods lying around everywhere, save us from its collapse.
