Katsutoshi Yuasa, born in Tokyo and educated at the Royal College of Art in London, has made a name for himself in a career spanning over twenty years by combining the techniques of woodcut with digital photography. His woodcuts are profound explorations of the transience and beauty of everyday life.

Through a meticulous creative process that involves weeks of preparation, Yuasa manages to capture the essence of his subjects in a unique way that is both decorative and impressionistic. The monochrome works, which are mostly inspired by natural scenes and cityscapes, invite us to reflect on the relationship between photography and woodcut.

‘Our perception is shaped by past experiences and environmental influences, so the printing plate is a representation of the past adapted to the present,’ says Yuasa.
