until 02.05. | #2721ARTatBerlin | Gallery Z22 shows virtually (see links below) from 28 March 2020 the exhibition On The Road with photography of the artist Johannes Neuhann. The exhibition can also be viewed in person by appointment.
Johannes Neuhann: “The beautiful is where you find it – this variation of a quotation from Marcel Duchamp hits the core of my artistic activity. On the Road – the title of the exhibition at Galerie Z22, which links the two photo series on display, expresses an essential characteristic of my working method.
On the way on the paths and streets the curious eye is the most important tool. While walking, cycling or driving a car, objects are examined for their aesthetic usefulness, only to be finally fixed with the camera. Signs in the surroundings, such as the temporary yellow marking stripes, are recognized, selected, photographed and later only slightly edited as potential elements of an image composition, regardless of their meaning and function in traffic.

The found objects I discovered show a variety of forms that no human being could ever invent: dancing lines, strict geometric constructions, weathered and cracked markings, overlays of crosses and arrows that create new independent “compositions”.
By isolating them from their usual context and presenting them in a different environment, for example on the wall of a gallery, the viewer’s attention is drawn to unnoticed phenomena of our everyday urban life. The objects, stripped of their original symbolic and functional nature, become elements of a new visual language.
The same applies to the photographs of the series “Aqua stanca”, which were taken on long walks over many years in Venice. These photographs are abstract images that have painterly qualities. The cropping of the photos creates an abstraction with differentiated, strong colours, which only remotely, through the water in the lower half of the picture, refers to the place of origin.

In the series “The yellow lies on the road” it is sometimes also possible to collect marking strips “worked” by weather and road traffic and present them embedded in bitumen varnish as assemblages.
