until 13.10. | #2180ARTatBerlin | Galerie Martin Mertens shows from 8th September 2018 the exhibition”Path of Navigation” by the artist Jim Harris.
For his new series of works, the British Plein-Air painter Jim Harris left the urban space that has been the source of his motifs for a long time (mostly of his current hometown Amsterdam) and has worked in the beautiful surroundings of Laren, east of Amsterdam for most of the spring and summer of 2018. Paper has also gained significance as an image carrier for Harris in recent years. Paper is an easier and quicker material to work with in nature and the individual sheets combined can also form a larger overall picture.
His main aim is to encourage the viewer to have a more thorough look at nature, to switch off their smartphones and to take in the natural phenomena with all of their senses. Nature is Harris’ studio. He lets the brush glide over the paper effortlessly and swiftly in order to capture the constantly changing light conditions, as well as the movements of clouds, trees and fields. The fine weave of the branches and the delicate speckles indicating clouds or fields are rather reminiscent of Chinese or Japanese landscapes. With few means, Harris playfully achieves a lively composition of white, seemingly light-flooded surfaces, and all the nuances of grey leading right up to black structures.

The gallery will also show a group of small-scale oil paintings on wood. Harris strives to reproduce nature’s impressions as spontaneously and directly as possible, often leaving the work sketchy, which is precisely what makes them fresh and lively. Two aspects that have always played a major role in his work have now become the protagonists of this exhibition: the play between light and shadow, and the reflection of a waters’ surface. He achieves both masterfully, equally with his oil paintings as with his ink drawings.
