until 28.06. | #4687ARTatBerlin | Taubert Contemporary shows from 02 May 2025 the exhibition Sequences & Variations by the artist Ignacio Uriarte.

Ignacio Uriarte, born in Krefeld in 1972, does not have a conventional CV. He initially studied business administration and worked in various administrative positions before devoting himself entirely to art in 2003. This professional experience in the world of the office has had a significant influence on his artistic practice, which is strongly characterised by the everyday routines, materials and actions of office life.

Uriarte’s work is characterised by conceptual rigour and subtle aesthetics. He creates complex works that are often characterised by repetition, sequencing and variation. He explores the simplest gestures of an office worker: the folding of a sheet of paper and the unconscious scribbling without any intention. These simple techniques allow him to question the boundaries between art and everyday working life and to discover the poetry in the banal.

In the entrance area of the exhibition there are two works with a serial, almost cinematic character. The Red Triangle Movement group of drawings consists of nine drawings with a triangular motif that depict a sequence of movements along a curve. The triangles change their orientation and seem to want to set not only themselves but the entire room in motion. The paper installation opposite, Diagonal Horizon, also depicts a sequence of movements, in this case along a horizon. There is a serial change in size from DIN A3 to DIN A10, as well as an almost magical mirroring / reversal of orientation.

In the adjoining exhibition and office space, the triangle is taken up again as a motif and played through in different variations. On the main wall is the paper installation Diamond Net with a strong architectural character. Folded A-4 sheets form a wall relief with a concentric diamond pattern that is brought to life by light and shadow.

In addition, four individual drawings can be seen in which differently arranged triangles form geometric compositions reminiscent of logos, religious symbols or diagrams. Three times Eight is one of these drawings. Here, a total of 24 triangles are arranged in three concentric circles, alluding to the modern division of time in a day: 8 hours of work, 8 hours of leisure, 8 hours of sleep. Each triangle has a grey scale, which can be understood as the passage of time.

The third exhibition room contains drawings that dispense with the straight lines of the previous rooms and appear to be inspired by the artist’s new home on the Mediterranean.

In Variation and Iteration 1 to 6, different shades of blue are related in wave-like movements. Each time it is the same curve that forms horizontally and vertically superimposed, pointed ovals, but also parallel and complementary oscillations. The result is a typology of six possible combinations and sequences of movements that are reminiscent of both natural phenomena and serial work processes.
