Horst Schäfer (1932-2022) emigrated to New York in 1961. He became an early employee of the New York office of Agence France-Press (AFP), thereby gaining access to important press agencies and photo magazines. His work appears in Newsweek, Harper’s Bazaar, Life, Fortune, among others. First major article in 1962 in US Camera, 1964 exhibition of “Architectural Views” at the Rockefeller Center, subsequently several photo reports in the New York Times.
In addition, there is free work, which often develops from dealing with the topography of Manhattan. The architectural photographs, with their abstract, structural conception and lighting, open up their own aesthetic world and open up new possibilities for the medium. Likewise, the street scenes, the images of the parks and urban outskirts condense a specific moment, as they convey something timeless through the compositional quality, the black and white values and the atmospheric content.

In 1968 he was named “Outstanding Press Photographer of the Year 1968”. After returning to Germany in 1980, he resumed agency work. The magazine Nike. European Photograph publishes a large-format special issue on Horst Schäfer in 1994. In 1996, a comprehensive exhibition took place in the art collections of Veste Coburg and in 1997 in the New Collection in Munich. The publication was awarded the “Sappi European Book Printer of the Year Award”. In 2020, Edition Dittmar published an expanded and completely revised new edition of the New York catalog on Horst Schäfer from 2012, with qualified specialist articles and a detailed, commented biography.
