until 20.01. | #4126ARTatBerlin | Galerie Inga Kondeyne – Raum für Zeichnung shows from 09. December 2023 the exhibition “S/W” by the artist H.Frank Taffelt in the backstage of the gallery.
Backstage, new specimens from the Taffelt KB.S. series await a visit; the abbreviation refers to the production of artificial flowers in Sebnitz at the time, a craft tradition in Saxony in which the artist’s ancestors were involved. But that’s not all. Taffelt’s picture supports are also impregnated with the past: File covers, invoice pads, office papers from his grandmother’s laundry and flattening business are given a strengthening primer before the artist actually gets to work; he cuts, folds, creases, folds, glues narrow strips of paper, which, set as elevations row after row, create idiosyncratic paper objects. This paper strip structure, which never denies its craftsmanship, is lined up in rows, as it were, up and down hills and is filled with gaps, empty spaces and grooves, has one thing in particular in store for those who look closely and patiently: a rich, wondrous play of light in the shadows, both between the smallest elements and in the structure as a whole. Echoes of artistic precursors (the Zero movement, for example) come to mind, but every generation tries to find out how we, who are inescapably subject to space and time, can use artistic means to deal with temporality on this side of its functionalised, measurable side that sets the pace everywhere. Small, delicate biros drawings, which are in no way inferior to the larger formats familiar from earlier exhibitions, complete the Taffelt ensemble in the backstage cabinet. The fullness of each sheet is due to the emptying of a biro refill, which is drawn almost obsessively over the paper in the artist’s hand until the countless superimposed hatchings as an opaque surface become a copper-coloured mirror in which the light is diffusely refracted and the surroundings appear dimly. We look into this mirror and recognise the sheet as a counterpart that does not reveal everything, that cannot be exhaustively grasped with any interpretative spoon…And we viewers: are we ourselves made of a different wood?
