extended until 06.01. | #2621ARTatBerlin | Galerie Martin Mertens presents from 9th November 2019 the exhibition Essential Beings by the artist Flavia Pitis.

The gallery Martin Mertens has already presented the work of the Romanian painter Flavia Pitis in two double solo exhibitions 2016 and 2018 together with her husband Radu Belcin. Now follows her first solo exhibition in the gallery.

This new group of works, which was created for the exhibition, has already begun in 2018. While at the time Pitis was even more strongly based on the human portrait, which was superimposed by porcelain-like forms, the porcelain figures now seem to develop a life of their own and want to transform themselves into human beings.
Isolated and dramatically illuminated like on a theatre stage, a Baroque scenery emerges in which the forms seem to swell out of the picture in an opulent and overloaded manner.

Flavia says so:
“Essential Beings” is an attempt to convey a fleeting impression of a living material that harbors a spiritual self in a constantly changing identity.
The material of the seemingly porcelain-like substance is in constant flux in accordance with the inner struggle of these doubt-torn spirits. The characters are captured in the midst of the effort to transcend the limitations of this supposedly rigid material. Human and animal nature are united in this astonishing atmosphere. They are heroes who step into the light and make clear their urge to develop.
The materiality of the painted porcelain, hair, skin, light and shadows give the scenario strength and credibility to confirm the reality of their experience.
These beings are the spirits who take the most important steps for all of us to overcome the human condition and expand the boundaries of this reality.”
