extended until 07.03. | #2654ARTatBerlin | Galerie Martin Mertens presents from 11th January 2020 the exhibition Linientreu by the artist Felix Baxmann.

Galerie Martin Mertens is starting the New Year with the first solo exhibition of the Berlin-based draftsman Felix Baxmann. The artist completed his studies in 2017 as a master student at the Berlin Universität der Künste and in the same year won the Rostock Art Prize for hand drawing.

The largest group of works consists of ink drawings on paper, which are constructed from countless tiny woven patterns. Some of them are condensed in several layers in such a way that structures are created that are reminiscent of textiles. His working process is almost meditative and requires extreme discipline and endurance.

“When I draw, the process is always based on a task. I set myself a task before I start.
For example, I use only a pencil and make a hundred drawings with it. At some point during this process I come to a point of physical and/or mental exhaustion – a point where I want to make my work easier by changing the colour or medium.
But I don’t do that; because overcoming this moment of exhaustion is the focus of my work.
By constantly overcoming myself, a sensitivity arises in me, which in turn creates new sensitivities, which then refer to the smallest things. Through the slowness of working, my drawn forms become denser, making something invisible in the work visible: Time and conquest.
Each of my works contains the desire for an external sensibility, i.e. in the process of reception a feeling for silence and sensitivity should develop. The drawings should sensitize the recipient both for his or her viewing process and for himself or herself.”

(Felix Baxmann, 2017)
