extended until 16.11. | #2630ARTatBerlin | drj art projects currently presents the solo exhibition “Anarchy of Forms” in the form of a space-related artwork by the artist Esther Stocker. Accompanying the artist has arranged works of special artist guests from the fields of installation, sculpture, clothing, furniture and painting with further works of her own to form an art living space (see below).

Looking to the derivation of the words, it’s easy to see that anarchy and chaos are opposites: while anarchy understands the absence of authority as a system of order, chaos means total disorder, a gloomy emptiness—ultimately the nothing that is antithetical to life. The equation of the two concepts in political-social daily life is therefore to be understood as an attempt to equate lack of authority with a state of danger, and conversely to suggest that the rule of the many by the few is a prerequisite of security.

In the exhibition Anarchy of Forms, Esther Stocker explores this relationship in the context of a specific architectural space: What is the effect of a non-hierarchical—therefore anarchic—arrangement of congruent forms in a 19th-century interior space, which is anything but neutral? For instance, in the context of its limits and our perception of them? To investigate this, Stocker arranges variously-sized black squares in the first exhibition room of drj, on the walls, floor, and ceiling—the limits of the space— disregarding the space’s predetermined characteristics, thereby breaking down the given relationship between space and forms both geometrically and structurally.

This work is a continuation of Esther Stocker’s years-long interest in systems of order, their disruption, and the effect of this experience on the viewer, which she has pursued in many successful site-specific installations.

As in these pieces, Stocker’s artistic work, which is rooted in painting, has also expanded into the realms of sculpture, clothing, furniture, and architectural space itself. This can be experienced in the second half of the exhibition. As a counterweight to the geometric installation in the first room, in the second, Stocker arranges works and objects of her own, as well as pieces by other artists from her community and that of drj, with the goal of designing an abstracted art living room. The composition creates a spatial and atmospheric ambience that aspires to the vision of a Gesamtkunstwerk, in the sense of a site of connection between people and space, or rather, being and living, as an artistic vision, as inspiration for a deepened understanding of a personal, everyday life with art.
