until 07.10. | #1579ARTatBerlin | Galerie Michael Schultz presents from 2nd September 2017 the exhibition “ceramic works” by the artist Edi Rama.

As the start of this year’s Berlin Art Autumn, we are pleased to be able to present ‘Ceramic Works’, Edi Rama’s second solo exhibition. After his much-noticed debut of ‘Calendar Blossoms’ in 2015, he has found a spatially expanded form in line with his daily drawings, building on the sketches and now rethought into the third dimension. These spontaneous, filigree, architectonicorganic and playful ceramics and their colorful glazes remind of the beginnings of his public artistic activity: the famously colored house facades of the formerly dimgray city center of Tirana.

The artistic and political life of Edi Rama, who has been Prime Minister of Albania since 2013, changed dramatically when he left Paris in the early 1990s and returned to Albania as Minister for Culture. This was not an easy decision because he was a typical nonconformist as an artist. The new profession confronted him with an unfamiliar environment, with rituals and patterns that were beyond his previous life habits.

In the daily business of politics, he soon developed a method which was rather unusual in his profession. Rama started drawing during those countless conversations, negotiations and telephone calls. Daily schedules, templates, appointment calendars have thus been transformed to poetic fables though his pen.

Rama’s drawings have a whole new dimension in their three-dimensional approach, thanks to their powerful multiple appearance as a wallpaper. The presidential office in which he receives his guests is also lined with this wallpaper; it makes the office seem spacious, but signals creative unrest at the same time.

Last year, Edi Rama presented his newly developed ceramics to the public at Marian Goodman in New York for the first time. A further variation of his wall design can be seen parallel to our exhibition until the end of November at the Venice Biennial, curated by Christine Macel, in the main exhibition.

Exhibition period: Saturday, 2nd September to Saturday, 7th October 2017
