CHRISTIANE SCHLOSSER

A colourful sound dominates the gallery space in Christiane Schlosser’s exhibition. A ‘sea of colour’ in blue-violet covers the longest wall. She has drawn 90 individual sheets (34 x 24 cm, 2020) line by line in meditative serenity. In each line, she makes a decision to pause before concentrating again on the brush. At times, Christiane Schlosser wants to use colour, but always remains located in her idiosyncratic drawing work. This is clearly revealed when looking closely at other drawings in the exhibition. Works in which it is often only apparent from close up that she has touched the paper with her pencil over a large area in a regular, concentrated manner. In the close observation of her abbreviations, which are often variations on basic geometric shapes, tension dissolves into calm. Her drawn planes continue, absorbing time.

PETER RIEK

In this exhibition, the draughtsman Peter Riek shows works from the series “across time”. Even though the artist occasionally draws on wood, iron, carpet or asphalt, in this exhibition he focuses exclusively on paper as the basic material. Not least because his graphic cabinets are overflowing and he discovered drawings from the 1990s while sifting through them, he was overcome with the desire to rearrange the found objects. Peter Riek thus tackled revisions by pasting over areas, overdrawing, cutting out interesting fragments, which in turn were collaged into other sheets of paper by him.

Since Peter Riek draws with Sennelier oil pastels today as he did then, and working with collages was and is always in play as well, it will be difficult for the viewer to discern what the artist drew or pasted on his Schoeller-Hammer papers in 1992/94 or 2020. How has his canon of forms changed in 30 years? The exhibition offers a voyage of discovery into the drawing world of Peter Riek.

Peter Riek, born in Heilbronn in 1960, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart and was awarded scholarships from the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg, the Cité des Arts Paris and the Bartels Stiftung Basel, among others, as well as various art prizes. Numerous exhibitions and projects, e.g. with the Prinzhorn Collection Heidelberg or the Haus am Waldsee Berlin, made him nationally known as a draughtsman.
