until 21.11. | #5177ARTatBerlin | Galerie SCHMALFUSS BERLIN shows from, 10. October 2026 the exhibition “Open Grounds – Between Nature & Architecture” by the artist Carola Schapals.
In her oil paintings, Carola Schapals creates a unique visual world that lies somewhere between lush vegetation and clear, functional architecture. She weaves together impressions from her travels, personal memories and her surroundings to form atmospheric scenes in which glass façades, light, reflections and plants interact with one another.

Carola Schapal’s painting is remarkably original and unique. Through a blend of plein-air naturalism and pure abstraction, she creates a ‘magical’ intermediate world in which architectural nostalgia (Bauhaus) and a lush, overgrown, almost menacing wilderness converge. Despite the sensitive use of often bold colours, her paintings have a tranquil and inviting quality. The invitation ‘Step inside and find peace’ lends them an unusual pull.

The connection to Van Gogh (Artist-in-Residence and drawing prize at the Vincent van GoghHuis in 2015) is no coincidence: like Van Gogh, she uses colour less to depict subjects than to create a mood.
Opening: Saturday, 10. October 2026, 4 – 8 pm.
Exhibition dates: Saturday, 10. October until Saturday, 21. November 2026
