until 29.10. | #0724ARTatBerlin | taubert contemporary shows from 10th September 2016 the exhibition Mit allen Ecken und Kanten by the artist Beat Zoderer.

On the occasion of Berlin Art Week 2016, taubert contemporary is pleased to present new works by the Swiss artist Beat Zoderer in the exhibition ‘with all edges and ledges’. The exhibition was designed in parallel with the exhibition ‘Nagelfluh’ which opens in Mies van der Rohe Haus, Berlin, on the following Sunday, 18 September 2016.

As was the case with ‘Zwickel’ as well as in his exhibition ‘Fold & Dip and other incidents’ at Bartha Contemporary in London, Zoderer makes use of different materials to explore the themes of expansion and positive and negative space in both 2D and 3D.

Playing on the prime number 5 and the classic pentagon in his work ‘Fold & Dip’, Zoderer prepares the transparent testing ground for all other forms. The delicate, yet powerful, coloured lines of the dips unfold an almost tangible and increasingly expanding force.

On this basis, Beat Zoderer has developed a new group of even more expansive works, which could be equally well described as wall sculptures. The highly complex ‘unequal-sided pentagrams’ made of plywood represent in both content and form the biggest leap to Zoderer’s more advanced use of form. They attract the viewer instantly.

Two single, massive ‘penta stones’ made of polished black granite show simplified interpretations of space as positive and negative. Shifting, colorful paper ‘pentas’ also outline the oblique, repeatedly slanting wooden pentagrams which come into contact with the surrounding space from their position on the wall.

The variety of hidden and unexpected colors, shapes, materials and meanings so typical for Zoderer culminates in a columnar sculpture, the ‘9-storied dodecahedron’ as direct opposite. Challenging practically any and all spatial imagination, this sculpture, on a formal level, synthesises the playfulness of all the different shapes in the exhibition – with all edges and ledges.

Beat Zoderer was born in Zürich, Switzerland, in 1955. He lives and works in Wettingen, Switzerland and Genoa, Italy.
