extended until 29.06. | #2353ARTatBerlin | Galerie Brockstedt shows from 21st March 2019 a solo exhibitions with bronze sculptures, paintings, drawings and graphics by the expressionist-cubist artist William Wauer.

Once again, Galerie Brockstedt succeeded in bringing an important collection of Classical Modern art from a private collection in Zurich to Berlin. The collection consists of 20 bronze sculptures and 10 paintings by the expressionist-cubist artist William Wauer (1866-1962) from 1916 to 1930, along with various drawings and graphic works.

The “jack-of-all-trades” William Wauer was born in 1866 in Oberwiesenthal/Erzgebirge as the son of an assistant preacher. His further career led him to study art, philosophy and art history in Dresden, Berlin, Munich and Leipzig. He travelled to the United States, to Vienna, Zurich and Rome, worked as editor, feuilleton editor and illustrator of magazines and as artistic expert for the Lingner-Werke in Dresden, where he developed the form of the ODOL bottle still in use today.

In 1905 he went to Berlin and was brought to the Deutsches Theater by Max Reinhardt. He worked in radio and was a pioneer of silent film from 1911/12. William Wauer devoted himself to the fine arts from 1916 and created magnificent sculptures, drawings, paintings, watercolors, and prints. His typical cubo-expressionist figures (e.g. “Schlittschuhläufer” (1916), “Läufer” (1920), “Der Blitzreiter” (1923) and “Eisbär” (1924), he formed in various materials, especially in bronze. His portraits made him famous, for example the busts of Herwarth and Nell Walden (1917/18), Rudolf Blümmner (1919) and Albert Bassermann (1921), Wauer’s favourite actor.

“In addition to the dominance of abstraction – in which the figurative was to varying degrees eliminated – numerous works of painting and sculpture were also characterized by a rhythmic dynamic based above all on accentuated contrasts of color and form, diagonal compositions and, in sculpture, on a sharp-edged setting of planes leading to lively light. The suggestion of dynamism thus striven for corresponded to the modern metropolitan experience, through such technical inventions as film, car, airplane, rapid transit railway and other machines. (Anita Beloubek-Hammer, William Wauer and the Berlin Cubism, exhibitor cat. Kolbe Museum, Berlin 2011, p.74).

  1. I wish I had known about the exhibition last year, as I would have visited Berlin to see it. William Wauer was my grandfather’s cousin & we only knew that “a nephew” came to America, which referenced his 1888 visit. Whether or not he may have visited his relatives in Iowa & Nebraska (en route from New York to San Francisco) is not known. However, as his father in Germany kept in touch with his younger brother (my g grandfather) in America, they may have only heard of his visit by letter.

Are there perhaps any catalogues of the exhibition remaining?
