until 02.03. | #3264ARTatBerlin | Galerie Klaus Gerrit Friese, in cooperation with Aurel Scheibler, presents from 1st December 2021 the exhibition Raum fassen – Raum lassen – Werke 1954 – 1984 by the artist Norbert Kricke.
In collaboration with Aurel Scheibler, Galerie Friese in Berlin is showing works by Norbert Kricke from 1954 to 1984. Norbert Kricke (1922-1984) was one of the most influential post-war artists in Germany and a pioneer of minimalist sculpture.
Kricke developed the idea of sculpture that derived from and consists merely of the line. He turned the line into a poetic symbol of space and time. This shift from the physical to the simple, elementary and nonetheless ambiguous was radical. In his drawings, Kricke also found ways to make an imaginary depth visible in the physically ‘flat’ space of paper, providing it with energies, directions, crossingsover, concentrations, and superimpositions. It was the drawing, the act of drawing, that connected him in the most profound and direct way to the element which constituted the alpha and omega of his working and thinking: the line.
“Kricke’s central means is the ‘line’, which he organises in the drawings as a graphic trace, and in the sculptures by means of steel wires of various thicknesses. Here is where his work begins time and again, and here is where his fundamental rethinking of the sculptural comes in.
