until 10.07. | #3066ARTatBerlin | EIGENHEIM Berlin presents from 5th June 2021 the exhibition “Champagner im Keller” with photography by the artist Nina Röder as well as the exhibition “wing walking” with installation and objects by the artist José Taborda. Parallel to this, the exhibition “to be continued” by the artist in residence Masimba Hwati as part of the Radio Art Residency Weimar will be shown in the salon.
Nina Röder – Champager im Keller
When Nina Röder’s grandparents died in 2017, the family had to clear out their house within a week and eventually sell it. Most of the grandparents’ belongings were packed away haphazardly – only a few mementos were deliberately selected and stored in a basement room in Röder’s mother’s house in Windsbach, Bavaria. At the beginning of 2020, the door of this room was opened again for the first time. With an ambivalence of wonder and melancholy, all the objects, furnishings and especially the grandmother’s clothes were examined. In this very basement room, Nina Röder and her mother staged portraits, self-portraits and still lifes with the lifted objects for the camera during the Corona Lockdown, creating a stage for an absurd theatre. The series CHAMPAGNER IM KELLER joins Röder’s works about her family, in which she confronts loss and grief in a performative and humorous way. As in her previous series, Röder explores individual capacities for action and questions the influence that our family and our origins, as well as losses and inherited traumas, can have on our thoughts and actions.

Nina Röder’s artistic focus is on photographic works that negotiate sublime structures of biographical narratives and combine aspects of the performative with the time-based pictorial space of photography. The often absurd or poetic atmosphere of her scenographies conveys the tension of her figures’ biographical experiences. Two thematic complexes crystallise in her work: photographs taken in the natural space that connect to discourses on the Anthropocene and post-Romanticism, and series that engage with biographical narratives of her family. The series about her family explicitly search for hidden and historical mechanisms of personality development and inherited traumas. Her photographs in the natural space negotiate different aspects of psychological states related to the phenomenon of letting go of people. The emotional or real loss of people due to death or separation is made pictorial in these series through the poetics of the wall installations.

José Taborda – Wing Walking
José Taborda explores the public’s reaction through sensory provocations. His installations and objects, made of built and prefabricated elements, of mechanical and digital compositions defy the limits of perception – playing as in magic – with unveiling and hiding. And as Antoni Tàpies once argued – art is like a magic trick, the viewer must ignore that it is an illusion.

José Taborda was born in Lisbon in 1994. He studied painting at the University of Lisbon and fine arts at the Bauhaus University in Weimar.
At the gallery’s Salon: Masimba Hwati – to be continued
Masimba Hwati was born in 1982 in Harare, Zimbabwe and is currently artist in residence at the Radio Art Residency Weimar. Between April and May, Masimba had his studio at EIGENHEIM Weimar, invited guests, created works, realised performances and concerts. Now the gallery is showing the works created there at EIGENHEIM Berlin in the Salon. Among them are objects, instruments and costumes that were used in various performances, as well as drawings, sound and video documentations. The busy artist works at the interface of object, performance and sound and is known for his unconventional three-dimensional sculptures made of a wide variety of materials and media.
Masimba Hwati holds an MFA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and is a PhD candidate at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in the field of art practice. He is an alumnus of the Skowhegan School of painting and Sculpture class of 2019. Hwati studied and taught sculpture at Harare Polytechnic Art School. He is represented in various museums – University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA), Iziko, South African National Gallery, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Scott White Contemporary, San Diego, George R. Nnamdi Collection, Detroit Michigan, National Gallery of Zimbabwe, Gervanne & Matthias Leridon Collection, among others. In 2015 he exhibited in the Zimbabwean Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale. He is an honorary research fellow at Rhodes University Fine Arts Department in Grahamstown, SA and has had solo and group exhibitions in many different countries including Belgium, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Germany, USA, France and Canada.
