until 09.01. | #2902ARTatBerlin | Galerie Born Berlin shows from 5th November 2020 the exhibition Solid Shapes with new works by the artist Angela Dwyer.

The five different platonic bodies (solid shapes) must each fulfil three laws:

1. the body must fit into a sphere This means that all corners or edges touch the inside of a sphere.

2. all surfaces or polygons of the body must be the same (e.g. triangles or squares or pentagons or hexagons etc.).

3. all edge lengths of the body must be equal.

In my new works I examine forms which we think we already know and which we take for granted. I started with triangles with different angles, then diamond shapes, up to hexagrams and tilted cubes, manifest three-dimensional forms.

While in my previous work I was looking for an abstract way to make visible the conflicts between man and nature, settlement and desert, – like earthquakes or floods, which also includes the reconstruction of a city on its ruins or the permanent digging up of a harbour, the new series I call “Solid Shapes” is looking for a more manifest representation of where we are, – in this particular place, in this particular moment.

In the series “Irregular Squares” I distorted the shape of the square. The viewer accepts the intrinsic visual paradox that my squares were not subject to the strict laws of geometric precision.
The visual and physical distortion invites the viewer to react emotionally and opens the space for memory and associations.

In “Solid Shapes” I examine a more manifest representation of where we are. – This period of general insecurity and the impact of changes in human interaction has created a strong need to hold on to our core values, while at the same time there is a shift in priorities.
I refer, among other things, to a line from the poem ‘The Second Coming’ by W.B. Yeats: “the centre will not hold” or to the thoughts of Levi-Strauss/Lacan on the myth of the individual as a basis of subjective structure.

“Solid Shapes” show through the pictorial composition both the isolation within social groupings and the growing reluctance to engage in human relationships.
As we quickly adapt to new rules, habits and procedures when they are required and necessary, we change not only our personal interactions with the outside world, but also the way we view ourselves.

Since most polyhedra are basically connections of triangular surfaces, inwardly and outwardly pronounced and connected at edges and corners, in my new work I began to draw the solid forms without the aid of geometric tools, in order to approach the abstraction inherent in the forms through the repetitive explorations. The drawing of the forms is free, allowing for distortions. Through the repetition of the shape of the triangle, the lines are both fragile and of great intensity.

The chosen colour palette of the new works of lemon, lime, violet, purple and blue tones create a kind of artificiality, flattens the space and does not necessarily represent the colour rules of natural light and natural form, but rather has to do with the inner contexts of the painting itself. It forces a negative space and a positive space within a pictorial space to coexist as a whole. The many layers of precise gradations of colour determine how we perceive the respective form and also define the space within which it is drawn.

It feels as if things are falling apart and we try to hold on tightly to this ever faster changing world, trying to find meaning in who we are and what is coming.
