Artwork

The statue Athena Parthenos was created around 170 BC. Its impressive size measures 4.05m height, 1.19m width and 0.65m depth.

Brief description

Even if the arms and back of the head of our Athena Parthenos are missing, and her wrinkled robe is damaged, the statue of the goddess is impressive with a height of over 4 m. Her feathered shield has been preserved. The goddess is standing on her right leg, the left free leg is slightly angled. Replicas of Athena Parthenos and illustrations how the goddess with a shield to her left and a winged Nike on her right hand, supported by a column. It is possible that these attributes were also accorded to our Athena Parthenos. However, this cannot be said with certainty. She was discovered during excavations in Pergamum, a Greek city in Asia Minor, today’s Turkey.

Genre & material

The statue originates from the era of High Hellenism in Greece (approx. 230 -150 BC), made from marble.

Athena – according to Greek mythology, she is the goddess of wisdom, war strategy, art, crafts and skill. The Greek capital Athens is her namesake city. Her most famous colossal statue was located in the Parthenon in Athens, the “virgin chamber” for the city goddess. The fragment of the statue of the Athena Parthenos standing before us is still very impressive at a height of 4 m, but is a comparably counterpoint to the said monumental statue of the Chryselephantine Athena Parthenos by Phidia. Chryselephantine means, simply put, “made from gold and ivory”. This huge statue of the goddess Athena, created by the most famous sculptor and architect of Classical Antiquity, Phidias and his co-artists, was presumably the most famous cult image of its time, and was supposedly covered by gold plates weighing a total of over one tonne.
