Ernst Ludwig Kirchner – Girl in Tub

Artist

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was born on May 6, 1880 in Aschaffenburg. He committed suicide on June 15 1938 in Frauenkirch-Wildboden near Davos in Switzerland and is considered one of the most important German representatives of expressionism. Kirchner was one of the 4 architectal students in Dresden, who on June 7, 1905 established the “Künstlergruppe Brücke” also known as KG Brücke. One year before his suicide, the Nazis considered his art to be degenerated and destroyed or sold around 600 of his pieces. His death might have also had something to do with his morphine addiction, which he wrote about in letters.

Artwork

Brief description

A naked woman in the bathtub is bending towards her prefixed right foot. She holds a towel to her hip with her left hand. Her hair is tied together on her head. Kirchner sketched the outline of the woman very gently with feather strokes and shading. Two years beforehand, in 1911, Kirchner already drew a seated woman in the bath. Naked bodies of men and women were very popular in the artist group KG Brücke. The image of a bathtub inside a closed room was rather unusual, yet used frequently by Kirchner.

Genre & Material

Painting of expressionism. Painted with a bourdon tube and black ink.
