until 19.12. | #0268ARTatBerlin | From November 12 to December 19, 2015 Gallery Barbara Weiss presents the exhibition “to be built” by the artist Peter Fend.

In collaboration with Oracle, Galerie Barbara Weiss presents an exhibition of the American artist Peter Fend (*1950). Since the late 1970s, Fend has consistently dealt with ecological questions. In his extensively and often collaboratively conceived projects, Fend combines the underlying principles of Conceptual Art and Land Art with political activism and an entrepreneurial spirit. Medially versatile, the work includes satellite imagery, architectural models, constructional drawings and aeronautical maps as well as drawings, programmatic texts and video.

The works and materials on display concentrate on the 80s and 90s, starting with an excursion into Fend´s early writing and work, containing a series of works shown in The Real Estate Show. This exhibition was organized by Colab (Collaborative Projects) and opened on new years eve 1979/80, but was closed down by the police the next day. Joseph Beuys visited the exhibition and as a result invited Fend to participate in a project for the city of Duisburg, also documented here. In the following years, Fend focused on his work within Ocean Earth (OECD – Ocean Earth Construction and Development Corporation), a corporation he co-founded, conducting satellite analysis for various media partners. It was the first commercial enterprise devoted to this hitherto classified images. On display are published newspaper articles, satellite imagery, research material and texts written by Fend.  In 1988, Peter Fend joined American Fine Arts and began to show work under his name as well as with different labels, e.g. Beach Party and RAPID, two more projects included in the exhibition.

Peter Fend has had solo exhibitions at Esther Schipper, Cologne; Christian Nagel, Berlin; Tanja Grunert, Cologne; Anne de Villepoix, Paris; Marta Cervera, Madrid; Marc Jancou, London; Mars Gallery, Tokyo; Nicola von Senger, Zurich; Roger Pailhas, Marseille; Essex Street, New York; and with Georg Kargl in Vienna. From 1988 to 2004, Fend worked with Colin de Land / American Fine Arts, New York. Fend participated in Documenta IX, 1992 and the Venice Biennale, 1993.
