until 15.11. | #4749ARTatBerlin | CAMERA WORK shows from 27. September 2025 a Solo exhibition by the artist Patrick Demarchelier.

The exhibition is divided into two thematic focuses: Fashion photography and portraiture. These show impressively why Patrick Demarchelier is not only considered one of the “Big Five” of fashion photography, but is also one of the most influential photographic artists of his time. His work epitomises photography that combines elegance with substance – technically brilliant, yet full of a feel for the subtle nuances of expression. In Demarchelier’s fashion photographs, fabrics become sculptures, bodies become composites of light and movement. His collaboration with Christy Turlington marks a central chapter in his oeuvre. Their joint works are icons of an era.

At the same time, Demarchelier’s portraits reveal a special closeness: Glenn Close, Paul Newman, Anthony Hopkins, Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Demi Moore – they all appear not as stagings, but as real encounters. Diane Kruger, Kate Moss and Gi-sele Bündchen are also part of these multi-layered works, in which the photography elevates the personality to an artful verisimilitude. With this unmistakable sbl, Patrick Demarchelier is one of the most influential figures in modern photographic art – far beyond the world of fashion. His iconic works are iconic, timeless and still effective today.

About Patrick Demarchelier

Patrick Demarchelier (1943-2022) grew up with his four brothers at his mother’s in Le Havre. His enthusiasm for photography was sparked by a camera he was given for his 17th birthday. His initially vague passion for photography then developed into a clear objective for his own professional future. A thirst for knowledge and the desire to perfect his skills drove him to move to Paris at the age of 20. In addition to working in photo labs, he studied the visual language and aesthetics of renowned artists in the leading fashion magazines.

In the years that followed, Patrick Demarchelier became one of the best-known fashion photographers with steadily growing success. A further move to New York in 1975 went hand in hand with his international breakthrough. Since the late 1970s, his work has appeared in fashion magazines such as Elle, Glamour, GQ, Mademoiselle, Vogue and Rolling Stone. Patrick Demarchelier has also worked for renowned international fashion and jewellery houses, including Armani, Calvin Klein, Chanel, Dior, Versace and Yves Saint Lau-rent. The artist was given the special honour of being the first non-Brisian photographer to be entrusted with the portrait of a member of the royal family – Lady Diana. Demarchelier’s work is exhibited in museums worldwide and can be found in famous public, museum and private art collections.
