until 05.10. | #4453ARTatBerlin | CAMERA WORK presents from 24. September 2024 the Group exhibition PORTRAITS OF POWER – U.S. PRESIDENTS IN PHOTOGRAPHY of the artists Cornell Capa, Elliott Erwitt, Jacques Lowe, Steve Schapiro and Mark Shaw.

To mark the 60th presidential election in the USA, the CAMERA WORK gallery is presenting the exhibition Portraits of Power: U.S. Presidents in Photography from 24 September. It comprises a compilation of more than 40 photographs, some of them world-famous, in which portraits were taken of the majority of US presidents of the 20th and 21st centuries before, during and after their time in office – including Barack Obama, Donald Trump, Bill Clinton, John F. Kennedy, Dwight D. Eisenhower and Theodore Roosevelt. The works from 120 years of US Politics provide insights into the lives of US presidents, both in the political and public sphere and in private moments.

In contrast to Europe, the photographic staging of US presidents and presidential candidates has played a more central role in the USA since the Kennedy election campaign in the early 1960s. The collaboration with renowned photographers such as Yousuf Karsh, Albert Watson, Patrick Demarchelier, Martin Schoeller, Michel Comte, Nadav Kander and Elliott Erwitt has been a tradition ever since.

One focus of the exhibition is on the work of Pete Souza, who was Chief Official White House Photographer for Barack Obama and already worked as a photographer in the White House during Ronald Reagan’s presidency. His best-known works include the iconic photograph in the Situation Room of the seat of government, which became part of the collective memory through its medialisation.

The second part of the exhibition is dedicated to John F. Kennedy. He is regarded as the first president to successfully use photography for media staging. The 35th US President established the position of Chief Official White House Photographer for the first time with Cecil W. Stoughton. With a special awareness of the power of images, Kennedy, together with selected photographers such as Cornell Capa, Elliott Erwitt, Jacques Lowe, Steve Schapiro and Mark Shaw, influenced the way in which US presidents are portrayed and staged right up to the present day.

Exhibition dates: Tuesday, 24 September to Saturday, 05 October 2024
