until 01.04. | #1072ARTatBerlin | lorch+seidel contemporary presents from 18th February 2017 the exhibition “A TOUCH OF LIGHTNESS” with sculptures by the artist Wilken Skurk.

With titanic force and in multiply twisted torsions, a metal clump ascends into the air before freezing suddenly as two angular appendages, like clenched fists, nearly collide. Only a dark, narrow slit separates the two ends. Is it the moment before impact? A gaping chasm? The big bang? … A cluster of architectural elements is intertwined and condensed to become a noble fortress: a fantastic site, secure and steadfast. Where else can treasures be stowed? … Two people who, despite all conflict, approach one another, suggesting an imminent embrace, yet halt at a distance that is charged with
tension. Who did not recall hesitating before the first touch? … In his sculptures, Wilken Skurk addresses deeply human emotions such as violence, comfort, safety and intimacy. His language is polyvalent: representational, figurative and abstract expressive forms alternate and mingle. Material and compositional contrasts are characteristic artistic resources. En passant, their rough, unfinished appearance endows Wilken Skurk’s weighty works with a touch of playful, childlike lightness.

WILKEN SKURK (born in Dresden in 1966) studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin-Charlottenburg. In 2001, professor David Evison awarded him the title of Meisterschüler. Wilken Skurk lives in Berlin.
