until 08.12. | #1675ARTatBerlin | Galerie Gilla Lörcher presents from 4th November 2017 the exhibition “Recents Paintings” by Dutch artist Ab van Hanegem. The exhibition provides an overview of the painters new work.
Art historian Constanze Musterer about Ab`s work: „Over-dimensional brush marks stretch across the canvas, tubes of colour appear to explode, and organic forms in black and white remind one of photocopied blueprints of architectural elements. Suddenly, a tangible and confusing colour field strengthens the general impression of three-dimensionality within the interaction of colour, line and direction. As a viewer, one quickly has the impression of being more in than in front of the paintings, and submits to the whirlpool of different perspectives. Overlaying colour trails repeatedly lead into blind alleys, yet the artist skilfully, and masterfully in his painting, opens up a loop hole into the next dimension. The journey races further into the world of possibilities and illusions which appear for a moment to be quite real.“
„In my more recent work, the spaciousness is no longer clearly orientated towards the perspective. The dimensions in my work are difficult to identify precisely. I focus on spaciousness inspired by phenomena from the topology, a branch of mathematics. For example the Klein Bottle and Möbius strip. Both refer to an endless, closed surface. A plane with seemingly two sides (front and back), but still one and the same surface causing front and back, top and bottom to overlap inseparably. Sometimes executed in a sleek and architectural way, at other times expressive by nature. The most recent works are mainly expressionist, material plays a greater role in the creation, yet it is often constructed as architecture. For me these ‘impossible’ structures represent special areas, ‘thinking spaces’ you might say. Areas where you can wander infinitely, not only with your eyes but also mentally.“ (Ab van Hanegem)
