until 21.06. | #2429ARTatBerlin | Köppe Contemporary presents from 10th May 2019 the exhibition Zwischenwelten (> Intermediate Worlds) with artworks by the artist Thomas Ritz.
Thomas Ritz (*1966) was awarded the Rheinische Wirtschaft Prize (1995), the ARK Baseler Kunstpreis (2001) and the Keller-Wedekind-Stiftung (2017). Thomas Ritz has been represented with exhibitions in Switzerland and abroad since 1987.

“Thomas Ritz is a painter and draughtsman. He is interested in the representational representation of ambivalent motifs, be they imaginary, constructed landscapes, frozen-looking scenes or figures and animals in the broadest sense. […]
The artist’s works are based on memories, his own or found photographs, media images, film stills, or show reminiscences of art history. In some cases, current political situation images also find their way into his oeuvre. […]
His works are characterized by a sublime, gruesomely beautiful balance: For all the beauty of painting, there is always a precarious moment of loneliness, vulnerability, transience, or even threat. Some works seem disturbing or uncanny.
In his works, the artist deals with fundamental questions of image and pictorialness. Our traditional viewing habits are challenged and questioned. The artist demands from the viewer a confrontation with reality and objectivity – both with that of the picture and with that of our surrounding reality. […] Realities, be they memories of a free childhood in nature around Basel or the depiction of an underwater nuclear test of the Americans in the 1950s, are translated into images that suggest realism and figuration, but at the same time are exposed as illusions.
