until 12.04. | #4145ARTatBerlin | 68 projects shows from 1. March 2024 the exhibition “[Study layers]” of artist Seong Joon Hong.

Under the title “[Study layers],” 68projects by KORNFELD presents works by the Korean artist Seong Joon Hong, created during his summer 2023 residency in Berlin. In his pieces, the artist updates the legacy of Hanji, traditional Korean paper. Tradition and innovation merge in his images, forming a narrative about the intricate aspects of life. Seong Joon Hong’s art serves as an intense reflection of our own complex layers and vibrant colors.

Hanji, the traditional Korean paper, is more than just a medium; it is a Korean cultural treasure with a long tradition and incredible versatility. The elaborate manufacturing process involves at least 100 steps, imparting durability and breathable and waterproof properties to Hanji. With a unique structure characterized by fibers and inclusions, each sheet becomes a one-of-a-kind creation. The diversity of Hanji can be seen as a metaphor for life. The challenges of production and differences in colors and structures symbolize the complexity of human existence. In our exhibition, Hanji is presented as an artistic medium and a unique reflection of our complexity and vibrant colors. It challenges us to engage with our reflection, shape it, and recognize the beauty of diversity within.

In the “[Study Layers]” series, Seong Joon Hong works on visualizing primers and paint layers on canvas. In his works, he creatively focuses on the concept of layers. Layers, for him, serve as a fundamental element to grant viewers deep insights into the essence of his art. Seong Joon Hong considers memories as the “paper” of his works – skin that becomes lighter from layer to layer. This metaphorical connection illustrates the fragility of memories, which can be erased or worn away as quickly as a lost layer.

Born in Seoul in 1987, Seong Joon Hong gained public recognition in 2017 as one of the “10 contemporary Korean artists” selected by Christie’s Hong Kong. He completed his bachelor’s degree in painting at Hongik University in Seoul in 2012 and obtained his master’s degree in 2015. The artist lives and works in Seoul. Seong Joon Hong has an impressive list of solo and group exhibitions, including “Enfolding the Air” (2023), “Gazing Between Layers,” and “Flowing Layer” (both 2022). His works have been showcased at international art fairs and auctions, including the Christie’s Hong Kong exhibition “Natural Selection” (2017). In 2020, he was awarded the Publicart Magazine Award for “NEW HERO.”
